Advice for Fastener/Screw Manufacturers

Hi All, If I'm posting at the wrong place, please let me know and I apologize beforehand. I'm a fastener/screw manufacturer focused on construction (wood and concrete). My parents have been doing B2B mainly to international distributors, but I've been trying to look for sources such as lumberyards, contractors, etc. that I can sell directly to (with certifications for screws for wood constructions both in the US and EU). I understand that they might not purchase as much as distributors, but it's something I'd like to develop. Are there any memberships or forums that I can take a look at? Thank you. submitted by /u/mikoshih [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2J8FxHt via Handy Rep Ai

Construction management and BIM

Hello everyone, I recently graduated with a master's in Construction management and have a bachelor's in civil engineering. I'm looking for full time job opportunities to work as a BIM/VDC coordinator (using my Engineering knowledge and skills that I have learned during my masters). So I was wondering how likely will it be for companies to hire me for the position I'm interested in? PS: I have done a lot of academic projects on BIM/VDC but don't have any professional experience except for a three months long internship. submitted by /u/_whatislove_ [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2XYb1Ey via Handy Rep Ai

Advice on floor and roof truss tie downs for high wind?

I've got 20 mph sustained winds, and was going to use Simpson's hurricane tie to attach my 20' long floor joists to the sill plate. Then run 2x6 strongbacks on 8 foot centers perpendicular to that. Anything else I can do to over build this? I am using a ribbon board across the top of my trusses, and now I'm thinking I should have used a rim joist on the outside (but the floor truss is 14" so it was an odd size). Secondly, I have room-in-attic trusses, with like a 6/12 roof, and gable dormers. The top of the roof will be exactly 30' high with roofing on it. I was going to use the Burmon roof truss ties, as they seem to be the strongest and lowest gauge metal. Imagine a constant 20 mph wind, and 80 mph gusts frequently. What would you use? Thanks for any advice! submitted by /u/humaniteer [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2J6HMuM via Handy Rep Ai

Fireplace sticks out too far

Hi I recently bought a house and I think the fireplace is sticking out too far(1.5 to 2ft) and takes up too much space making the living room too small. I bought the house before it was built and I didn't ask the builder to push it into the wall. If I want to push it outside now, would that be a major job? I've been considering going into HVAC. i work for a small 4-man crew installing rain gutters for a bigger roofing company that has branched out to HVAC. I was told today that they were looking to hire people with or without experience and I'm really wanting a career. I also want to work for a company that takes care of their employees as the one i work for now doesn't. can you guys tell me your personal pros/cons of this trade? what hours are like? the rest of the internet says you can kiss holidays and weekends goodbye but i feel like it depends on who you work for? also, I'm a 26 y/o male in Oregon if that matters. submitted by /u/MashDaKip [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2UScyKa via Handy Rep Ai

Want to switch careers to something construction related... advice?

So I'm in the real infancy of my research, but just looking for any advice you all are willing to share! I graduated college three years ago with a marketing degree. Long story short, I have no interest in anything marketing related and realize I messed up in my choice of major. I wake up everyday dreading going to work and can't stand sitting at my desk all day. I've got a bit of a back issue currently that may prevent me from physically stressful jobs (but I'm hoping to have that fixed within a few months). Really looking for any advice on how someone could make that kind of switch without having a technical degree. There's a local community college that offers a construction and carpentry program, or I'm willing to take online classes to earn a degree in something like construction management (if that would be worth it). I just can't take this damn marketing job anymore haha Thanks for the help! submitted by /u/digits94 [link] [comments] f

Prinoth debuts the Raptor 500, a monstrous—yet gentle—land-clearing carrier vehicle

Alongside the launch of the company’s latest crawler carrier , Prinoth recently introduced a new addition to its Raptor lineup of land clearing carrier vehicles. at the Bauma 2019 show. The new Raptor 500 is powered by a 9-liter Cummins engine delivering 430 horsepower. Prinoth says the machine achieves the lowest fuel consumption among competing models and delivers all 430 hp of engine power to its attachment. Weighing in at around 19 tons, the machine is 6-7 tons lighter than the next lightest competing model, Prinoth says. The combination of strength and light weight allows the Raptor to chew through the most rugged of terrain while not disrupting sensitive soil due to its low ground pressure. The Raptor 500 joins the Raptor 300, Raptor 300R, RT 400 and Raptor 800 in Prinoth’s  vegetation management carrier vehicle lineup. Knapheide intros service body for Ford Ranger (VIDEO)

Knapheide has big news for fans of the 2019 Ford Ranger. First up is their all aluminum service body built for the Super Cab model of the midsize truck. Next is their announcement of an upcoming aluminum flatbed. “That opens up a whole other realm of applications,” Mike Soich, Knapheide’s Southwest regional sales manager, says in the video below. While Soich wouldn’t divulge much of the yet-to-be-revealed flatbed, he did give us a tour of the six-foot service body. Like the Ranger itself, Knapheide’s body has composite fenders. The bed floor gets a boost in strength thanks to interlocking, extruded aluminum panels. Two-stage locks help keep tool box doors more secure. Lights inside the boxes can be controlled by an upfitter switch the Knapheide has added to the driver’s side panel just below the dash. The aluminum body is complemented by an aluminum understructure which helps keep weight down on the Ranger which has best-in-class payload at 1,860 pounds with a standard pickup b

ADOT selects two major projects for first year of plan funded by gas tax increase

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced that the Alabama Department of Transportation (ADOT) selected two major transportation projects for the Rebuild Alabama Act First Year Plan 2020, which was signed into law on March 12, WAAY TV reports. The plan is funded by the state’s first gas tax increase since 1992. The projects are in Madison and Limestone counties near Huntsville. One project will resurface a portion of Interstate 565 and use part of the shoulders to add an additional lane in each direction, making it a six-lane interstate. The other project will expand an interchange on I-65 westward. Phased in over three years, the tax increase will raise an estimated $320 million a year for road construction, with about $12 million going to the port of Mobile. The state tax on gas and diesel fuel will raise to 24 cents a gallon from its current 18 cents a gallon rate starting in October, with an additional 2 cents per gallon increase per year on October 1st in 2020 and 2021. Yaeger (Kern) Bridge Credit: Minnesota Department of Transportation The longest bowstring arch truss bridge in the United States is slated to come down this summer or fall, with a plan to store it for future use. The Yaeger (Kern) Bridge, built in 1873 over the Le Sueur River between South Bend and Mankato townships in Minnesota, is in danger of falling down. Question for anyone who PMs/Estimates/Manages Bids

Hey guys, just doing kind of a quick gauge of interest on an idea I had. You may remember me as the estimator who complained about the industry being far behind the times and wanted to work from home. Well I’ve actually ran into another issue at work. We have this older estimator (60’s) who refuses to put all of his bids on the bid calendar and never looks at it, which ends up with him and I sometimes working on the exact same bid unless we talk about everything that we are doing. Since I’d rather be left alone to do my work I thought of an idea. I’m currently learning to write code in my spare time and figured that I might as well use it to solve an issue at work. So here’s my question: say I made a google chrome extension for managing and tracking bids, would anyone here actually be interested in using it? I’m sure there are people out there using good software already but the few companies I’ve been with either do a terrible job at managing it themselves or they use an excel spread

I was thinking some work jeans/canvas pants and a collared short sleeve button up and steel toes of course. Obviously I want to wear something that’s suitable for a construction site but I also don’t want to look like a bum if I’m filling in as an engineer. Any input is appreciated. submitted by /u/PreexistentLignite [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2ZJNKrI via Handy Rep Ai

Should I get a degree in construction management?

Hi y'all! I'm looking at colleges/college majors and construction management has recently piqued my interest as a potential career, and I was wondering what this subs take on it is. I also have a few questions, if anyone could be so kind as to answer them: Do construction managers need trade/construction experience (i.e actually swinging the hammers). Having this is not a deal breaker seeing as I will probably end up doing this the summer after freshman year at least and possibly during a gap year, should I take one. Is there any specific university in the US you recommend? I've been considering Purdue because it's cheap and requires 800 hours of internship experience before graduation, in addition to making it super easy to double major in project management should I wish to bail on construction for whatever reason. Are there any hidden downsides for the job? I know it's often long hours and stressful, but the reasons people described seemed pretty similar t
