Temp Job, some one had 20 metal beams fall on their leg today.

This is totally fucked up. I have been working a temp job the last two weeks, basically unloading a small warehouse of excess inventory (cabinetry) and demoing and rebuilding the shelving. Everyday there has been different people between 3 and 10 workers per day. As we were re stacking a pile of metal beams (approx 70-80 lbs each) and wood one guy in the morning, one guy who just showed up today, stacked about 20 metal beams in one row high against a c-can. I knew the stack was unsafe, but I didn't knock it over, as I should have. Later on I am pulling wood out of the area but staying away from the stack. Next thing a good guy who had been there most of the week, started working next to me. I had totally forgotten about the unsafe stack (I just wasn't thinking). Next thing you know the stack of metal beams falls on his right leg. :TL:DR Working temp job, some guy stacks heavy beams single file high against a container, later on someone gets their leg broken. submitted by

Average Profit Margin?

Hey, so I made couple post in here and I’ve completed my first year. So I’ve been aiming 10% profit after I pay myself and other expenses per job. I’ve read online and got answer from 5% to 30% or higher that people have done. I do drywall, stucco and landscaping so I know each should be different (I plan on switch landscaping into its own DBA) but I just sub most my work out as of right until I build and I am able to start hiring. submitted by /u/vegas_rebel702 [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2t0EXSW via Handy Rep Ai

A Question for Framers/Carpenters

Hello folks, I just had a quick question for those here working as carpenters/framing specialists. Today I had some carpenters working on site and they had to stop work in an area because wall they were framing up was ending in the middle of a window? Can anyone explain to me why that is an issue? My best guess is that you would want a joint between the 2*4s where the window is as that is the weak spot for moisture an water. Having the ends there will open up for an accelerated rot? Thanks. submitted by /u/aitchfourex [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2BeiGWh via Handy Rep Ai

VIDEO: Trailered crane slowly shoves truck into a jackknife

About 15 seconds into the video below, you might wonder aloud “Why is the truck driver accelerating before the crane has even been secured to the trailer?” The thing is, these guys didn’t even get a chance to secure the crane in the first place. In another instance of heavy things on inclines illustrating the power of gravity, the wheels on the trailer begin to turn soon after the crane rolls onto the trailer. Not long after, the weight of the crane begins to push the semi down the incline despite the tractor’s back wheels being in the air while its bumper scrapes against the ground. New Cat Multi-Processors speed cycle times, boost crushing force

Cat MP332 Caterpillar has introduced three new Multi-Processors for demolition work that the company says are faster and more powerful than previous models. The MP332, MP345 and MP365 can cycle 50 percent faster and generate 19 percent more cutting and crushing force than previous models, Cat says. Cat also designed the excavator attachments to be easier for changing jaw types. One operator can change the jaw within 15 minutes with standard hand tools, thanks to a new locking system, the company says. Cat designed the Multi-Processors with what it calls “speed booster” technology, in which the system automatically shifts hydraulic action between force (boost mode) and speed mode. In no-load conditions, hydraulic fluid flows rapidly to open the jaw or close it for contact. Once it makes contact, flow goes to cutting/crushing force. Forces range from 460 to 1,270 tons, depending on the model. Cat MP345 Jaw types for the multiprocessors are as follows: Concrete Cutter – outer

DeWalt intros new Flexvolt 60V cordless combination hammer, dust collection backpack at World of Concrete

Dewalt DCH 773 combination hammer Between harsh vibration and the occasional binding, big drills can cause big harm to your hands and wrists. Dewalt is reducing these risks with its Flexvolt 60V Max 2-inch Combination Hammer (DCH773), which mitigates vibration and ergonomic harm to the user with active vibration control and an E-clutch system. The E-clutch stops rotation anytime the tool stalls or binds and shuts it down if necessary. For fast and efficient drilling the combination hammer puts out 19.4 joules of energy and 290 rpm using a 60-volt/12 amp-hour battery and brushless motor. Seven speed selections for drilling and chipping help tailor the force of the machine to the material at hand. If you are looking for something lighter, the 20V Max 1-1/8 inch SDS Plus D-handle rotary hammer (DCH263) pounds out 3 Joules of energy at 1,165 rpm. This corded model has constant speed control, regardless of material density and also features active vibration control. It also features a

Tributes for retiring NAPA president Acott tell of industry icon who fostered alliances, innovation

Retiring NAPA President Mike Acott addresses about 950 attendees at the association’s 64th annual meeting. He joked that he had just confiscated this ready-mix concrete toy truck from his grandson and wasn’t giving it back. PHOTO: Gary Fong/Genesis Photos The tributes poured in for nearly an hour during a special ceremony for Mike Acott, who is retiring as president of the National Asphalt Pavement Association after 34 years in the industry. He was a young British man who came to Maryland by way of South Africa in 1985, where his leadership included helping that country to resurface its roads. He joined NAPA as director of management/technology in 1985 and in 1992 became its leader. Becoming U.S. citizens was one of his and spouse Denise’s proudest moments, Acott told about 950 NAPA members at their 64th annual meeting. He credited his staff and volunteers for many of the successes seen by NAPA and the industry. But most of the ceremony in Marco Island, Florida, centered on testi

Construction Management Firm Behind On Payments

This is the case for at least 6 trades who have voiced this concern to me. I am embarrassed to be in this position, never have been here before. It is ruining my credibility as a site super. Need advice, dont wanna price myself out of a job.

Hey /r/construction ! So a quick TLDR of my background. I owned and operated a commercial drywall company with my dad for a long time until he unfortunately got cancer and decided to sell the company... which he rightfully did and he is very much enjoying retirement. Only thing is he was very "old school" and for all my management and estimating experience he and I were at salary for $25/hr. Because of the "well you'll appreciate this when I give the company to you and you want to retire". Which I get but then he sold and I didnt get a dime (Knowing him it will be inheritance money, he thinks far ahead like that). So Ive basically had a year off from management and have been working as a journeyman for hourly wage but am moving soon and have been offered a project manager position for a company out of the east coast doing drywall subcontracting again... Sooooo my question is basically for a ~$250mil company out of the east coast doing project management what

Framing Question

Company is being called out for bracing a conventional framed roof with purlins to strongbacks about every 8 foot. This passes a city code we build in but however this particular home is being built in rural Nebraska where code wouldn't necessarily reach out if I heard that right. Its worth noting the head foreman has 35 years experience, no complaints or failed inspections and has framed the same way for years. Probably built around 500 homes in his career. Homeowner got pissy with him and said he had an "inspection" and that the home failed due to roof bracing. The inspection was done by another contractor that had been in business about 2 years and he also fixed the said defects on the same day of inspection. Just sounds fishy. submitted by /u/gbrhusker23 [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2MFwPjH via Handy Rep Ai

Deere intros 544L loader with EH controls, cab improvements, new linkage

Contractors comparing the new John Deere 544L wheel loader with its predecessor 544K will notice three major changes, says Chris Clines, Deere product marketing manager for utility wheel loaders: the cab environment, electric-over-hydraulic controls and the linkage. The 166-horsepower 544L, on display at the 2019 World of Concrete show, is one of three utility loaders updated to the L- Series. The 524L and 624L also were recently announced by Deere. “The cab is completely new with a focus on operator comfort,” Clines says. This includes an optional premium heavy-duty air suspension seat that is heated, ventilated and offers additional legroom. The HVAC system now includes a rear defrost, increased air flow and reduced noise. Three standard 12-volt auxiliary power ports in the cab allow charging of multiple devices. There’s also an emphasis on functional storage for such things as lunch boxes. “Operators tell us they want their cab to feel as comfortable as being in their pickup tr

GMC mulling plans for electric pickups, SUVs

2019 GMC Sierra AT4 Following Ford’s announcement that it plans to electrify its entire F-Series lineup with battery-powered and hybrid truck models, a GMC executive tells CNBC that the truck brand is “taking a close look” at a potential line of electric pickups and SUVs. ”Certainly, it’s something we’re considering,” GMC vice president Duncan Aldred told the news network, though he would not elaborate on any development plans. Instead, Aldred pointed to General Motors CEO Mary Barra’s March 2018 statement that GM is on  a “path to an all-electric future.” Aldred added that the cost of battery technology remains the biggest barrier to more widespread implementation across mainstream automotive product lines. That’s why, Aldred said according to CNBC, “automakers would likely target higher end products,” in order to cover up some of the added cost of the more expensive powertrain. And these days, there are few products higher end than pickups and SUVs, which CNBC notes “carry so

Cat North American dealers report 14% retail sales growth in Dec.; global construction equipment growth slows to 6%

Caterpillar’s North American dealers reported that retail sales were up 14 percent in December, compared with a three-month rolling period during the same period in 2017. North American dealer results lagged only the retail statistics reported in Cat’s Latin American region, which posted 51 percent growth in December in its Resources division (large mining, quarry, waste and material handling equipment) sector. Globally, Cat dealer sales were up 10 percent compared with the same period in 2017. Reviewing Cat’s Construction Industries results, North American dealers were up 9 percent in December, the first single digit growth number in all of 2018, which reached heights of 30 percent growth in August, compared with the previous year. The Construction Industries segments includes equipment used in heavy and general construction, rental, quarry and aggregates and mining. Throughout the world, the company’s construction industries segment is showing continuing signs of slowing down
