Spending a summer & only a summer doing construction work?

I need to get some money together before college, pays pretty decent in my area, have experience as a camp counselor doing 16 hour days full of labor. How do I make the best of spending my summer like this (assuming there’s not a reason to not do this) & what should I do to prepare other than perhaps getting in better shape? submitted by /u/Anarch_Angel [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2BSIfLT via Handy Rep Ai

Finishing basement

I’m planning to finish our basement, and I have a question regarding building on top of the floor. Right now, it’s sealed concrete. I plan on installing laminate on top of plywood on top of a subfloor mat, to prevent moisture buildup. Question is this- should I lay the entire floor down and then build the wall frames & planned bar on top of the flooring? Or build that first and floor around it? submitted by /u/Prana102 [link] [comments] from Construction http://bit.ly/2s4C7M0 via Handy Rep Ai

Polaris’ new jobsite-ready PRO XD UTVs boast industry-leading payload, towing capacity

From left, Polaris’ PRO XD 4000D and PRO XD 2000D Polaris designed its new lineup of UTVs for work in all kinds of environments – with industry-leading payload of 1,930 pounds and a 2,500-pound towing capacity. The line of utility task vehicles consists of the four-passenger PRO XD 4000D with all-wheel drive and the two-passenger PRO XD 2000D with either two-wheel or all-wheel drive. Polaris says it incorporated feedback from commercial and military customers in designing the PRO XD models for durability, safety and easy service. They run on a 24.5-horsepower Kubota Tier 4 Final industrial diesel engine, reaching a top speed of 26 mph. The UTV’s speed can also be limited for jobsite compliance. The engine braking system delivers slow decent down hills. To boost towing and payload capacities, the company designed a new rigid-frame chassis and boosted suspension. The bed is made of rust-free, dent-resistant composite and is large enough to fit a full-sized pallet. Driveline com

Anyone have a a good DIY enclosure tent design for pouring concrete in cold weather?

Greetings from Atlantic Canada. I'm building my house this winter. This week we're getting ready to pour the slab (25'x28'). Thing is, we need 3 days of min. 10C for the concrete to set, so we're trying to design a tent that'll enable us to maintain that temp. Aquajet’s Aqua Spine uses water pressure to remove concrete in tight spaces

Aquajet’s Aqua Spine Aquajet Systems  has developed the Aqua Spine to bring high-pressure water jets to concrete demolition jobs in tight, small spaces. “It allows operators to remove concrete in areas that have previously been inaccessible in a safe and efficient manner,” says Roger Simonsson, Aquajet Systems managing director. The company says the Aqua Spine does not damage rebar or cause microfracturing. It removes deteriorated or damaged concrete and protects the sound concrete, leaving a surface ready to accept new material. It also reduces exposure to silica dust. The Aqua Spine can be controlled by an Aqua Cutter robot or by a standard Power Control Unit. The system’s length and width can be adjusted by adding or removing spine beam sections, and it works well on road and bridge applications, the company says. It can be bolted to walls, floors or ceilings. It can also be supported by hydraulic platforms, cranes and scaffolding. With the Circular Power Head, it can work un

Talbert heavy-haul trailer, 60CC/55SA-LD, adjusts to meet states’ rules

Talbert’s 60CC/55SA-LD trailer Talbert’s 60CC/55SA-LD lowboy trailer can be configured in a variety of ways to help operators meet differing state regulations. The trailer can be operated as a spread-axle configuration with a 55-ton capacity or a closed-coupled configuration with a 60-ton capacity. To achieve the 60-ton configuration the trailer is paired with an optional East Coast-style E1Nitro spreader for a 3+1 axle configuration. The E1Nitro does this by providing proportionate weight distribution in each axle grouping. This allows Talbert to increase the trailer’s hauling capacity beyond using simple mechanical or rigid axle extensions, the company says. Talbert’s E1Nitro “As loads get heavier and heavier and our customers expand their operating territories to cover more states, there’s greater demand for trailers that meet requirements in a variety of locations,” says Troy Geisler, Talbert vice president of sales and marketing. “We saw more customers having the need for

Credit: Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project Construction of the second-tallest cable-stayed bridge in the United States is heading into its final year, with completion scheduled at the end of 2019. The deck for the new $1.2 billion Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project in Long Beach, California, stands 205 feet above the water, so the world’s largest cargo ships can travel underneath or their way in and out of the Port of Long Beach. The new six-lane bridge will also have a bike and pedestrian path and observation decks. It will span the port’s 220-foot-wide back channel, allowing ship access to the North Harbor area. Construction began in 2014. The cable-stayed design features two 515-foot-tall steel-reinforced concrete towers, which would make the bridge the second-tallest of any cable-stayed bridge in the United States, behind the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston, South Carolina, at 572.5 feet. Accidentally Sanded Asbestos Vinyl Flooring

Hi everyone, Yesterday I was removing some vinyl flooring from my 1920's home in Buffalo in the side stairway entry. After peeling two step off, there was still some paper backing that remained. I was wetting the backing to remove for most of the time. I got excited when I saw original hardwood floors underneath and sanded it for 30-seconds to just see what a small patch looked like (not thinking of course). The steps had the paper material and hardened glue. I realized that it could be asbestos and stopped immediately. I cleaned up the entire area and went around spraying all the walls and floors in the hallway with a wet all-purpose cleaner. I was vacuuming with my shop vac as well for the materials. My question is how bad was my exposure (assuming it was asbestos vinyl sheet flooring) bcs I did sand it (which is one of the worst things you can do)? Also, I had a door to the upper apartment open during this time (thinking it was shut). I wiped down as many surfaces a

Help With Remodel Planning

Hi All, I am in the process of closing on a house that I plan to remodel. We are looking to gut and redo most of the first floor. The first floor contains a kitchen, powder room, living room, dining room, along with a breezeway between the garage and house that was framed-in to create another interior space. The breezeway remodel was done very poorly, we will have to knock down the walls and reframe as well as raise the slab to match the elevation of the rest of the first floor. we would like to add a gas fire place on one wall and a sliding door on the other of the new breezeway. Our biggest projects are going to be completely redoing the kitchen, flooring through out, breezeway renovations as mentioned above, and eliminating the wall between the kitchen and breeze way (see existing and new floor plans attached). Opening the wall between the breezeway and kitchen is, as I see it, our biggest challenge. This was formerly an exterior wall and supports the second floor. I b

Career options/ improvement for carpenter

Hello all, I'm a bit stuck in a job that pays well for now but will not last a lifetime. So i did a school for furniture making, finished when i was 30 years old, and started my own company (its called self employement in Europe where i live, its very easy and can vary from taking whole projects and hiring people to just working for a hourly wage) Anyway now the demand for construction capenters is high, i believe all over the world, so also where i live in the Netherlands. It is easy to make money now, however i don't think i can do this the rest of my live. But i find it hard to figure out realistic options, so nothing happens really. Just work 5 days a week 7am till 4pm go home watch tv, sleep and work. Boring live. The work is ok, there is still ( a lot) to learn, i'm doing renovation of monumental buildings now. In the past i was a poor artist, taking my own furniture projects, promising cool stuff too clients and making things come true.
