The labor shortage is getting worse. Here’s how construction companies and AGC chapters are fighting back.

The labor shortage only gets worse as time goes on, and if you want proof of the dreary news the Associated General Contractors of America’s latest survey paints a gloomy picture for the present. But in presenting the survey results to the press, the AGC also brought in some key construction contractor members to talk what they’re doing to fight the shortage. These initiatives, both at an AGC national and state chapter level and at the level of individual construction companies, are getting results and helping to turn the tide. In particular, a program in Oregon to show teachers and school administrators the benefits of a construction career and a program in Houston to require locally trained craft workers are arguably the most creative ideas to come from the industry in decades. AGC partnered with Autodesk for the survey which gathered responses from more than 2,500 construction firms and found that the overwhelming majority, 80 percent, were having a hard time filling craft worker

Cat is selling its purpose-built forestry business to Weiler to better meet demand

Caterpillar will no longer manufacture heavy equipment built for specific forestry applications, and has announced a preliminary agreement to sell its current purpose-built forestry machines to Weiler. Included in the sale are Cat wheel skidders, track feller bunchers, wheel feller bunchers and knuckleboom loaders. Cat and Weiler say they still have to negotiate a final agreement, but expect the sale to close in early 2019. Weiler forestry machines will be sold through the Cat and Prentice dealer networks. Until then, “business will continue as usual,” according to a Cat statement issued to Equipment World . The company will continue to take orders for its forestry machines and “production will operate as normal to meet customer demand.” In fact, Cat says high customer demand is the primary reason it is exiting the business. Though that may sound like a contradiction, Cat contends that handing over the business to Weiler will allow the two companies to work in tandem to more quickl

Analyst: With truck orders booming and build backlog bulging, get used to waiting for new trucks

The best stretch in truck order history is going to continue likely through this year and well into next, analysts said last week at the ACT Research seminar in Columbus, Indiana. The big question now, says Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst at ACT Research, is will the current hot streak make it to 2020? Vieth says ACT anticipates the boom will finally subside next fall, but in the meantime fleets should get used to waiting for new trucks. Class 8 orders today are coming in faster than OEM facilities can build, and the build backlog is growing. “The backlog to build ratio right now is about nine months,” Vieth said Tuesday. “There are only 9,200 open build slots in the fourth quarter; and only 24,500 build slots in the first quarter in 2019.” Vieth says more than 150,000 Class 8 trucks were built in the first and second quarters this year and more than 160,000 are expected before New Year’s Day. Truck OEMs are preparing for a build rate of 1,330 trucks per day in Q4, but Vie

12 finalists in transportation project contest vie for two $10,000 grand prizes

One of 12 finalists for two $10,000 prizes is this Maryland DOT project to improve safety on a roughly 10-mile stretch of MD 404. This $158 million project took a two-lane road and widened it to a four-lane divided highway, with a 34-foot median and 10-foot-wide shoulders. With a chance for DOTs to win $10,000 for a scholarship or non-profit in their home states, this year’s top 12 transportation projects have made it to the final phase of the 11th annual America’s Transportation Awards competition. You can vote now for your favorite among the top 12 projects by clicking here . The dozen DOT projects in this round have made it through four regional competitions to get this far. That’s out of a total of 79 projects that were considered in the national competition sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Socrata, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. DOTs from 35 states nominated the 79 projects. The three highest-scoring projects in fo

Calif. approves hundreds of infrastructure projects

Photo courtesy of Caltrans. The California Transportation Commission (CTC) approved hundreds of transportation projects thanks to $690 million in funding provided by SB-1, the Times of San Diego reports. The CTC also approved more than $1.3 billion in funding for 150 transportation projects throughout the state, most of which are part of the State Highway Operations and Protection Program — the state’s “fix-it-first” program that funds safety improvements, emergency repairs, highway preservation, and some operational highway improvements. “These projects are just a small portion of the key improvements we need to maintain California’s critical transportation infrastructure,” California Department of Transportation Director Laurie Berman told the news agency. “Throughout the state, projects like these are being completed through SB-1 investments.” Some of the funded projects include modernization of trail and transit systems, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving safet

Isolation of footings and crawl space slab.

Hey all, I'm a carpenter by trade, acting as contractor on my own home addition. I have a 4" slab poured in my crawlspace. I isolated the slab from the exterior/peremiter footings with 2" foam, but also continued that layer over 2 interior/mid-span load bearing footings. Currently I'm planning on cutting a 5 1/8x5 1/8 hole in the slab and foam to get direct bearing on the footing with my post. Am I over thinking that or is it OK to have the 2" foam between slab and footing. submitted by /u/silversquirrel [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2NAPzR8 via Handy Rep Ai

VIDEO: After excavator’s tumble into hole, two more and a dozer required for rescue

According to the YouTube description of the below machine rescue video, during some excavation for a pumping station, a ledge gave way from beneath this excavator, sending it and the operator tumbling into the very deep hole they had just made. Two other excavators crawl over to lend a hand, attempting for a while to use the teeth on their bucket to, presumably, tilt their fallen friend’s tracks into a position where they have better traction. When that doesn’t work they try to link buckets with the out of commission digger in the hopes of pulling it out. That doesn’t work either though, so the trapped excavator operator decides to stab the side of the hole with his bucket and attempt to lift himself out. Nope. Thankfully, after a bit of digging by the trapped machine to give itself more of a level ramp to exit on (probably the idea that should have been tried in the first place), the excavator is finally able to exit with the help of a dozer. from Equipment World https://ift.

Kobelco, Leica, Engcon team up to create tiltrotator full-auto machine control

Starting next year, some Kobelco excavators will come equipped with the ability to automatically adjust bucket height and tilt through a new automatic tiltrotator function. The technology, part of Kobelco’s new Information and Communication Technology system for machine control, is the result of a three-way partnership with the Japanese manufacturer and Sweden-based Engcon and Switzerland-based Leica Geosystems, according to Engcon. Through the partnership, Engcon developed the tiltrotator, a quick-attach coupler that allows the excavator operator to rotate and tilt the bucket for more efficient, faster work. The new ICT system will automatically adjust the attachment’s height and tilt, in conjunction with an automatic stick, boom and bucket function, Engcon says. The operator just pushes a few buttons on a touchscreen to enact full tiltrotator machine control. A Kobelco promotional video of the device shows an SK210 excavator operator making quick work of building a large mound to

Unfinished bridge, ‘deadly detour’ causing safety concerns for N.Y. motorists

Still from News 10 video. A multi-million dollar bridge in West Berne, New York, was never finished and remains closed, causing frustration and safety concerns for motorists who have to use what they refer to as a deadly detour along Bradt Hollow Rd. and across Fox Creek, News 10 reports. In a 2015 report, the Capital District Transportation Committee estimated the bridge replacement to cost $2 million, but it was never finished. One motorist who travels the detour often, Kim Shoemaker, told the news agency that she believes the bridge wasn’t finished because the river bank was collapsing. She says the detour’s intersection at County Route 1 and Route 443 wasn’t designed for the traffic caused by the detour. “Where it comes out, it’s a bit of a turn and a hill. It’s not safe because you can’t see,” she said, according to the news agency, adding that a deadly accident happened there in July 2018. The project is the responsibility of the county, and according to the news outlet, t
