How do subcontractors in the construction industry market themselves?

Hi there! My boyfriend is starting a business as a subcontractor (installing high-end window blinds, shutters, shades, etc. on behalf of custom window design companies), and I'm helping him with the marketing. I'd like to know what types of marketing materials construction subcontractors (of any kind) use to introduce / present themselves to their contractors. I'm wondering if there is a specific type of document that a subcontractor - or any small B2B business for that matter - uses to "sell" / explain services. I live in the corporate world where resumes reign, but it seems like in this situation it might be more appropriate to submit a document outlining a summary of skills and business offerings, rather than a traditional resume detailing job history. Does anyone have any insight into this who might be willing to give us some pointers? Thanks a lot! submitted by /u/WellNoInFactILied [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2OEtu5p via

Asbestos concerns

I just moved into a house that needs doing up, and the ceiling is confirmed to be Artex containing Asbestos. When I moved in, there was a corner of the living room where the ceiling drooped down due to an upstairs leak. I (stupidly) had my grandfather saw out a 1.25m x 0.75m section of the ceiling and replace it with plasterboard, which has been nailed in and painted over. I then learned how deadly Asbestos can be. We did (extensively) vacuum and mop the affected area up, and there was no 'dust cloud' or anything. It's been a number of months since this happened....should I be concerned about any health dangers? I did a lot of research and the consensus seems to be that you need to be a handyman to suffer from Asbestos; a single instance of dust shouldn't really do anything. Can it still be lingering around after months of cleaning? submitted by /u/AnonymousRedditor100 [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2UhKYdh via Handy Rep Ai

Advice on takeoff software

I work primarily in lumber sales doing commercial construction projects. Most projects I do are turn key framing for lumber and labor. If I miss something it is on my companies dime so I have to be very thourogh. On almost everything I do a hard take off by printing a plan and going page by page. In order to grow I need to be able to quote more things. What software do you guys recommend? I will probably be on my own to pay the bill for the software, so price is a concern. I am fairly tech savvy, and want something that can work on mobile if possible so I can pull up my takeoffs and notes in the field. Best way to handle water pooling in the backyard when I want to put a large patio down

Hey guys, So I have several quotes from contractors but they all say something different. I live in a new subdivision so our houses are very, very close together. About 8 feet apart. My neighbor and I want a walkway from the front of our house, split down the property line leading to the backyards, that widens into a Y to each backyard door. On my property, I am planning a 13x27 patio that pushes up against the house. It's almost the entire width of the yard. The issue is I've noticed ice buildup this year on the back corners of my house. Near the backyard door, and on the other side. This ice buildup seems to be front water not draining as it should. I'm wondering how I should handle this? I've had contractors tell me different things, and to prevent bias I'd prefer not to say what they've said. If you as a contractor were going to do this, what is the best way to either move the water or deal with it? Thank you very much in advance :) submitted by /u

HAVs and possible prevention.

This was the best subreddit I found where I feel I could get some answers, so if this isnt what you want posted here I apologize in advance. I use a sawzall and grinder a lot cutting and grinding metal. I've always noticed that even using hem ten minor so that my hands get weak, forearms swell turn red and itch, also I get shoulder fatigue. Best thing I could find that matched it was HAVs (Hand-Arm Vibration syndrome) once my benefits kick in at work I plan on talking to a doctor about it and some other issues. However I'm just curious if anyone has some solid advice to help against it. I try and take breaks often but as soon as I fire up the tools again it comes back. It's not a daily thing because it's not from work but from my hobbies. I'd prefer not to stop doing them but I also dont want to cause any serious damage to my body. Any advice is welcome and thank you in advance. submitted by /u/This_is_Topshot [link] [comments] from Construction https:/

[ask] Where can I find plans for a Little League Press Box?

I'm part of a Local Little League and we are looking to build a 16'x8' 2-story press box with exterior stairs. We are looking for something extremely simple, but haven't been able to locate plans for self-construction (most everything is kit purchases). We are in Michigan, so there is significant frost/thaw cycles to contend with. The first story is to be used for equipment storage, and the second floor to hold 4-5 adults to keep scorebooks, run the scoreboard, and announce games via PA. I'm 25 years old, looking to get into a skilled trade. A local company has apprenticeship programs in plumbing, hvac, electrician, and commercial construction that is very enticing, offering free schooling and a cash incentive for completing the program. Komatsu intros GD655-7 motor grader with improved cab, controls

Komatsu has introduced a new motor grader with improvements that are centered around improving operator comfort. The new cab of this machine is “hexangular,” Komatsu says, with a rear side pillar layout and blade linkage positioning that together provide an “unobstructed view of the moldboard and front tires.” The cab also features a smaller, “right-sized” steering wheel that provides a bit more visibility and room in the cab. Komatsu has placed a new steering lever in this machine that allows operators to forego the steering wheel and keep their hands on the low-effort, work equipment levers while making small steering adjustments. The cab also features multi-position, adjustable arm rests; a new high-capacity, air-suspension seat and an operator presence monitoring system which alerts the operator when they leave the seat with the controls not locked out properly.   The new GD655-7 is powered by a Tier 4 Final Komatsu SAA6D107E-3 engine, providing 218 horsepower.
