Very basic question for any pro’s on a fire separation wall in garage attic...

Live in a two story, fairly modern house(built in 2004). I’m getting ready to install a 4 camera security system. I want to route at least 3 of the “power over Ethernet” cables through the garage attic, but half of the attic is walled off by, from what I understand, is a firewall, or fire separation wall. Am I good to just saw through it to make like a hinged door? Anything commonly behind it that I should be aware of? Any input at all would win any of you all kinds of internet points:) submitted by /u/damon32382 [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2H9bCOg via Handy Rep Ai

Using Google Drive for project management and estimating

I recently started working for a small general contracting company as a project manager, and this is really my first time in a major role like this. They've been using Google drive to organize jobs, create estimates, etc., and it works alright. But having used their method for about a month now, I'm trying to optimize it and make it more productive and efficient. They don't want to pay for a subscription to a true management software, because the scale of our jobs aren't really that massive. However, we do occasionally build custom homes and do fairly major remodels. Does anyone here have any experience using Google Drive to essentially manage/estimate/organize all their jobs? If so, have you come up with a good system to make things flow efficiently? I think it would be great to have a template for new projects, starting with client information, then estimating, getting sub bids, applying the bids, making notes, and having it all populate a finished looking final dra

noob replacing a window

my bathroom is 60" wide and I'm looking to take out the existing window that is in there now (35"x35") and replace it with one that is 48"x 14". Am I right in assuming that the studs will all have to be replaced to accommodate the different size window? submitted by /u/martin_84 [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2T61mO5 via Handy Rep Ai

What kind of drug testing does your company perform? (Urine or hair?)

I'm exploring topics for a college essay and I started wondering about drug use in the construction industry. Knowing how prevalent drug use is in the construction industry, I am curious about what kind of testing the various companies out there are doing? Urine testing seems to be in the majority in most industries, but do any of the bigger companies (McCarthy, Bechtel, Suffolk, etc.) perform the hair tests for their employees? Also, how has the state-based legalization of marijuana affected the drug testing in states like California, Colorado, etc.? Thanks in advance for any input! submitted by /u/teedew [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2SCK5Hq via Handy Rep Ai

VIDEO: This Cat excavator makes its living digging at the bottom of the ocean

We’ve posted plenty of videos of folks trying to rescue excavators from the watery depths, but this is the first we’ve seen an outfit content with letting a machine sink. That’s because this excavator is right where it’s meant to be, digging trenches on the ocean floor. It’s unclear exactly what kind of project this excavator is working on, be it pipeline, fiber or something else, but judging by all the aquatic plant life all over the body of the machine, it has been a sea dwelling digger for some time. And as far as the mechanics of this go, based on a few quick Google searches and a perusal of the comments on the videos below, it’s possible that this machine has had its engine removed entirely is having its hydraulic fluid pumped in from the surface. from Equipment World https://ift.tt/2EqHMlo via Handy Rep Ai

Boss hasn’t paid me

I posted to the legal advice subreddit but I’d figured someone here could help me too. I work a framing job in New Jersey and have 120 hours owed to me from my boss. Yes that is a lot of time and I shouldn’t have let it get so bad. He has previously had people quit who weren’t getting paid (should have quit then). This was a long time friend of his. The employee had a work van that my boss was paying for and held it hostage for a 4K check. What are my options here? I have read about the department of labor and small claims court as being possible solutions. I have texts and Facebook messages of dates, wages, hours owed, and job locations as proof. He normally pays me in full (doesn’t take taxes out) in the form of a check typically. Thanks for any help. submitted by /u/TempestDWS [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2SvD0bj via Handy Rep Ai

Roadtec boosts power on RX-700e cold planer with T4F engine, no DEF

Roadtec’s updated RX-700e Roadtec  brought to the 2019 World of Asphalt  its newly updated RX-700e cold planer, which now has an 800-horsepower Tier 4 Final engine that requires no diesel exhaust fluid. The new Caterpillar engine on the half-lane cold planer replaces the 755-horsepower Tier 4 Interim engine on the previous model. Roadtec says the increased power and an efficient design have increased the RX-700e’s production and reliability. The cutter housing’s angled moldboards reduce wear by preventing material from accumulating around the drum. The planer’s frame is made of A656 Grade 80 steel, making it stronger and lighter. The company also made the planer easier on the operator with track pads that are bolted on, which makes changing them faster. A 60-degree conveyor, as opposed to the traditional 40-degree conveyor, makes it easier to feed a truck in an adjacent lane or around a tight bend, the company says. A folding secondary conveyor is optional for transporting and

Tenna software, apps track assets, enable equipment inspections

Construction technology startup company Tenna has developed a system that lets contractors instantly know where all their equipment, trucks and tools are and even enables operators to conduct equipment and vehicle inspections. The One Platform system includes a variety of Internet of Things sensors – Bluetooth, GPS and cellular – and QR codes, an app and software for tracking assets and viewing that information, and the digital Driver Vehicle Inspection Program software and app. All of that information can be boiled down to one view for the contractor. “It’s one screen where you go to see everything you’ve spent your money on, every asset you own, and whether it’s being used the way it’s supposed to be,” said company co-founder Jose Cueva during the 2019 World of Asphalt show in Indianapolis. “I need peace of mind to know my stuff is where I think it is – it’s working, it’s running, it’s safe.” The system also provides such information as fuel consumption, billing and rental cost

Incoming project engineer for a general contractor. Tips to educate myself on general building practices/procedures for all disciplines?

Does anyone here know of any online or printed resources that could help me learn the basics of plumbing, wiring, dry wall, casework, roofing, etc? Just enough information so I can hold conversations with subcontracts without them explaining to me every minute detail. For the record, most of the projects this company does are large to mega-sized ($10's to 100's of millions) As a bit of background, I have already had one internship with this company, but most of my work was preconstruction, and therefore I did not develop my technical abilities. Any resources ya'll recommend would be great! did I get screwed over?

I had a bathroom gut and the guy doing it cut the pipes leading to the shower and replaced them with thick hoses attached with a clamp. I was not happy when I saw this and said why would you cut good piping to do this and now I was concerned about leaks. He rolled his eyes at me and said and I quote - these will last forever and there is no risk of leaking. I am of the school of thought if there is water there is always a risk of leaking. I am now also not getting very much hot water and the water pressure has dropped - both previously non issues. What do you all think? Is this current normal practice - it was copper piping that had no signs of water damage. I am concerned with those clamps popping off and flooding me out. He installed a cabinet blocking access to them so now I am not even sure if I would know if there was a leak until it was too late. I am a single mom with a child who has a severe disability. Mould places him at risk and I am tight on cash. The whole thing has bee

New York state’s acting transportation commissioner, Paul Karas, is resigning this week, saying he wants to spend more time with his wife in Illinois. Governor Andrew Cuomo had, in November 2017, appointed Karas, 67, to head the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDT). Before that, he served as president and founder of Karas Associates Co., an infrastructure development consultancy, according to the governor’s office . The Times Union reports that, in a letter to the governor’s office earlier this month, Karas said he wants to return to Illinois to be with his wife, who has “spent most of her time in Illinois pursuing her career and other interests. Secure Your Vacant Property Using Property Guardians

Property guardianship is becoming more popular than ever. Under this type of arrangement, individuals are given a much lower rent in return for staying in homes or commercial buildings that are currently empty. This situation is different than being a renter because the people involved do not pay as much money as regular renters. Also known as legal squatters, property guardians are given a place to stay so that they are not left homeless. The property guardian gets a license to rent a certain area of a house or a building. The amount they pay is extremely reduced compared to the rent of the area. Property owners benefit because they are getting a little bit of money, and they are discouraging squatters from taking over their property. There is also often taxes you have to pay for keeping a property vacant for too long. There are more property guardians now than ever before. This is primarily because the cost of living in the US continues to go up, and housing is very expensive. The
