What wood for battens?

I'm building an out-building (12 x 16) on my property. The house and garage/shop are cedar lap siding. I don't want to have the expense of plywood and western red cedar for such a small project. I'm thinking of using T111 sheets and attaching battens over the the routed channels. What do most people use in this situation? Thanks! submitted by /u/ichibanpapasan [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2pUctcl via Handy Rep Ai

Lintel for non load-bearing masonry?

Hi folks, I'm cutting a window into my basement, and the wall in question has a brick veneer on it (one story—about 9'), supported by the foundation wall. I think I need to size a lintel to support that veneer over the opening once it's cut. Masonry units are 12 x 1.5 x 3.5 inches. The IRC doesn't seem to concern itself w/ non-load bearing masonry (as far as I can tell from Chapter 6) when specifying masonry spans. The opening will be about 5'. Do I need a lintel over this opening? Feels like I do. If so, can a flatbar lintel fit the bill? I'd rather not remove courses to insert an L if I don't have to. Thanks for any guidance. submitted by /u/combatwombat007 [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2GngwID via Handy Rep Ai

Regarding regulation compliance on restoration of house after extensive burn damage: to what extent to energy compliance regulations come into play?

My dad is a loss adjuster, currently investigating a building for insurance claim purposes. We're in South Africa, and we have these fairly new building regulations (SANS10400-XA) regarding energy compliance, which is a big thing here. For a building to be classified as deeming to satisfy regulations, the fenestration has to be less than 15% of the building envelope. If the fenestration exceeds this percentage, measures have to be taken to ensure compliance, including window shading, insulation, heat pumps instead of geysers (boilers), what have you. Now, the client is adamant that his windows need NEW, specifically extremely expensive louvres, in order to comply with these regulations. The house itself is fairly old, and didn't have this shading in place, because as an existing building it is exempt from the regulations. My dad's point of view is that these regulations are only applicable to new buildings, and that restoration only has to restore the building to its prev

Quebec Canada: My buddy/neighbor is in a union (glazer) and gets doesn't get paid for stat holidays.

My neighbor is in a union (glazer) and gets doesn't get paid for stat holidays. This in in Quebec Canada. I live in Quebec, and my union (when I was in the carpenters local 93) paid me 8 hours for stat holidays that I did not have to work. Now, my job was in Ontario, so the rules might be different. My neighbor said it's because he gets 10% vacaction pay instead of 4%. I ALSO got 10% vacation pay when working for the carpenters union. I'm wondering if this is legal. Is it possible that Unions reps made a deal where they get more vacation pay, but no longer get paid for stats? I thought that was illegal to be honest. Does anyone have any experience with this in Quebec Canada? submitted by /u/Binsmokin420 [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2GmeFja via Handy Rep Ai

Looking for some Advice on Maintaining egress in an occupied building

We have a project where we are putting an addition onto the end of an existing building. The building is 2 story brick with exterior steel egress stairs at the end where we are putting our addition. The building will be occupied while we are excavating and installing the foundations. Does anyone have any ideas as to the best ways to maintain egress to the second floor while still allowing construction to continue below. We are thinking maybe a scaffold walkway to a stair outside the footprint of the building but we are not quite sold on that idea. Any help is appreciated. GMC’s redesigned 2019 Sierra is bigger, lighter, has a carbon fiber bed and a 6-function tailgate

Three months after wowing everyone with a redesigned 2019 Silverado, General Motors has taken the wraps off the next generation of the Sierra lineup. And though the 2019 Sierra and Sierra Denali half-ton pickups feature a new design, the exterior changes are a bit more conservative than what we saw from the next-generation Chevy. Beyond the different look and luxury-leaning features you’d expect from GM’s “professional grade” pickups, the new Sierra half-ton is differentiated from Chevy’s offering by three key features: a carbon fiber bed, the new MultiPro tailgate and a “Head-Up Display” that projects vehicle data onto the windshield. We’ll get to all of these features and more in this breakdown, but let’s start with the new design.   Exterior redesign GMC says the 2019 Sierra bigger than the previous generation of trucks “in virtually every dimension.” The truck maker has matched those larger proportions with design changes that made elements of the exterior a bit larger and

Potential Job Offer

I am having a second interview next week with the owners of a small local company that has been in business for about 15+ years. The position would be a project manager over several 5 to 10 man crews. They suggested in the first interview that they want to pay a little less than industry norm with a production bonus. They did about 2 million in business last year and this year should be about 50% more. I have extensive 15+ years in this type of experience in my own businesses and the opportunity to help them grow is what is interesting about this job. So my question is has anyone ever had an arrangement such as this and what would the % of production be? Salary would be around 60K. submitted by /u/melvander65 [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2GrWt7S via Handy Rep Ai

The ins, outs and peace of mind of aftermarket truck warranties

For the risk averse there’s no more uncomfortable feeling than the day after a truck warranty expires. Meanwhile, buyers of used equipment may never feel the sense of relief that comes with not having to shoulder all the financial load of a major equipment failure. Aftermarket warranties have become popular add-ons for used equipment and for extending coverage beyond a factory warranty expiration date but levels of coverage differ from standard factory warranties. While a manufacturer’s warranty may cover everything from the powertrain to the radio, aftermarket warranties generally offer coverage for only critical elements. “OEMs typically cover many more items, many of which don’t ever fail and/or that are not expensive to replace,” says Lynn Murphy, president and CEO of Premium 2000. “As much as I dislike this description, an OEM has ‘bumper-to-bumper’ responsibility for a prescribed term length. Aftermarket warranties typically cover expensive, game changing repairs; ones that ca

BFGoodrich intros two new severe duty tire models for construction with 50% price guarantee

By Max Heine BFGoodrich has introduced two all-terrain tires for the severe service market. The new BFGoodrich Cross Control S (steer) and Cross Control D (drive) tires target construction, logging and energy applications. With serrated shoulders, the tires offer improved traction,” said Adam Murphy, business-to-business vice president of marketing for BFGoodrich commercial truck tires. “Staggered shoulder blocks provide optimal traction to conquer most any condition,” he said. For durability, the tires have full-coverage protector ply, tough compounds that improve cut and chip resistance, and thick sidewalls to counter impacts and abrasions. Goodrich is offering a “work hard guarantee” for the Cross Control line.
