Assistant superintendents working with Senior Super

I work corporate interiors for a GC in Houston. I interned for a large GC in town for 2 years. Went to work as an assistant super after college. Did a grocery store under a cranky old super. I ran my own job after Hurricane Harvey flooded an HEB in town. Store was basically brand new from 8 ft down. I then left for this new position. My senior super is great. Very knowledgeable and knows what he is doing. My question is, how do most supers and their assistants work together? It was hard at first going from running my own job to going back to being assistant. I feel like sometime he has the job outlined in his head but doesn't share with me. I feel like there is a lack of communication sometimes. I don't know what he is doing or talking to, therefore I look stupid when the project manager asks me about a certain thing and I can't tell him because my senior was taking care of that item. Any pointers from seniors or assistants out there?? submitted by /u/mgnash10 [link

Cat launches 10 new mini excavators in lineup overhaul

Caterpillar introduced a number of micro and mini excavators during this recent GIE+EXPO in Louisville. The manufacturer says that new models come standard with several new customer-centered features. First up are the four micro excavators that pack considerable power in the 1-to-2-ton class. There is the 301.5 that has a canopy, standard tail swing and is in the 1.5-ton class; the 301.7 CR that has a compact radius and canopy and in the 1.7-ton class; the 301.8 is in the 1.8-ton class with standard tail swing and options for either a canopy or a cab; and the 302 CR is in the 2.0-ton class and has a compact radius. Operators have the option of a canopy or a cab. The 301.5 is ideal for the entry-level landscaper. The 301.8 is suited for heavy lifting and the 302 CR offers site stability for heavy duty jobs. One of the most notable features of these new excavators is the Stick Steer system. This allows operators to swap from a conventional lever/foot-pedal steering controls to le

U.S. construction starts to be flat in 2019 while another recession looms

During the company’s 2018 Outlook conference held in Washington, D.C., last week, Dodge Data & Analytics chief economist Bob Murray delivered his forecast for construction starts for 2019, saying that the industry can expect little change from the current year in 2019. Murray says Dodge is forecasting $808 billion in total U.S. construction starts, up slightly from the $807 billion estimated for 2018. The forecast expects a continuation of the construction industry ‘s deceleration, which began in 2016 when growth in total starts dropped from the 11- to 14-percent gains seen from 2012 to 2015, to an increase of 7 percent. Starts grew 7 percent in 2017, but growth is on pace to fall to 3 percent in 2018. “Over the past three years, the expansion for the U.S. construction industry has shown deceleration in its rate of growth, a pattern that typically takes place as an expansion matures,” Murray says. With this deceleration, Murray says many are wondering whether construction and

Trimble launches AI-powered load scale on Hitachi wheel loaders

Hitachi’s ZW250-6 is among the company’s wheel loaders for which Trimble’s L3180 SmartScale is an option. Trimble says the Loadrite L3180 SmartScale system uses artificial intelligence for faster, more precise loading. And the company has joined with Hitachi Machinery Loaders America to bring its newest onboard weighing system to Hitachi’s wheel loaders . The L3180 achieves weighing accuracy on all types of terrain and for operators of various skill levels, Trimble says. The system tracks the loader to monitor performance and can be used to help meet daily loading targets. It also prevents overloading, the company says. It is available at Hitachi dealers as an option on wheel loaders, from the ZW220-6  with a bucket capacity of 2 cubic yards to the ZW550-6  with 8.3 cubic yards of bucket capacity. Trimble says the L3180 is a complete revamp of its loader scale system and includes weighing intelligence and solid-state sensors for monitoring loading. The system syncs data through

VIDEO: World’s longest sea bridge opens, linking Hong Kong, mainland China

The world’s longest sea bridge opened this month to drivers between Hong Kong and mainland China. The 34-mile Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge consists of a 14-mile main bridge span, two other cable-stayed spans and a 4-mile tunnel beneath the Pearl River Delta. The tunnel is connected by two manmade islands. The engineering feat took 420,000 tons of steel – enough to make 60 Eiffel Towers – and more than 1.3 cubic yards of cement. Construction began in 2011. The bridge links Hong Kong, the city of Zhuhai on the mainland and the island of Macau. It has been built to withstand winds of more than 224 mph and is designed to last 120 years. The project reportedly cost $20 billion. Workers moved nearly 14 million cubic yards of dirt, laid about 863,000 tons of asphalt, constructed 45 bridges consisting of over 92,000 cubic yards of concrete, and applied 286 miles of striping. The first segment of I-269, from the state line to State Route 302, opened in 2015. The second segment from State Route 302

10 Things No One Tells You About Homeowners Associations

Homeowners associations (HOAs) exist to ensure visual uniformity and to protect the property rights of residents of a specific neighborhood. Most of the time they do a decent job, but because their rules and regulations are decided and enforced by a group of neighbors, HOAs can overreach and make life miserable for certain homeowners. If you’re thinking of buying a home in a neighborhood governed by an HOA, keep reading to discover 10 things about these organizations that you may not know (but should). from Bob Vila : Trusted Home Renovation & Repair Expert https://www.bobvila.com/slideshow/10-things-no-one-tells-you-about-homeowners-associations-52429?slide_name=hoa-laws& via Handy Rep Ai

However, this may not be a good choice for the whole construction project. Rain has a long-term effect on the quality of the concrete. This article will help you know what are the effects of Monsoon on Cement and concrete and how to protect them. How does the Rain Affect? SWPPP (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan) Software?

Not sure what other states call these as I only have experience in Texas and Oklahoma with SW3P plans, but does anyone have a good resource for either software or a word document in which you can fill in basic project information and it will compile a Stormwater Pollution Prevention plan for you? We have in the past gone through a consulting service to develop these plans but most of them are very cut and dry, I think it would be easy enough to compile yourself. My company only does work in the state of Texas so I could probably get away with just a word document or simple query. submitted by /u/Jvan45 [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2CRKDVp via Handy Rep Ai

Fencing: Where do I start

A little bit of background: Me and my friend are in college and this past summer we worked fencing. We both know how to make fences pretty well. We thought it would be cool if we went and bought lumber and knocked a fence out in a weekend and would do it every couple weeks or so. We have access to the right tools and a truck. We are both good workers and can do a good job. I already got some quotes from some lumber yards here in town and we have an idea of how much it would cost. Is this plausible? the only thing I'd be worried about is being uninsured then again we aren't idiots we have common sense. My plan so far is advertising on Craigslist and word-of-mouth through some locals I know who do construction here. Call land surveyors find property lines Call USIC find underground utilities Buy lumber and start What else should I look into before starting this venture? is this plausible? Also sorry if this isn't the right place to post this. Any info woul

Need to attach 2x6 roof trusses to shipping container.

Adding storage capacity to a 40' High Boy shipping container. Trying to figure out what could be used to attach 2x6 roof trusses to the shipping container. The 2x6s form a simple 1/12 roof. They will likely be doubled up making the width 3". Obviously one would like to avoid drilling holes in the shipping container. We are going fast so I'd like the "fasteners" asap.
