Requesting more money than the signed contract?

Help please (in Kansas City, MO if it matters). I recently hired a contractor to build out an office for me. The lady that runs the company came to the site, made notes, and submitted a bid for $8,431, with me providing all materials, some of which had already been purchased. I agreed, and we signed a contract, and I paid $4,000 down with the remainder due at completion, with the end date today (2/28). They ran into some plumbing and electrical issues, and made several trips to the local Home Depot to complete phone sales for more materials. Yesterday, she told me that since they didn’t plan for the plumbing and electrical issues, that it may take longer (no biggie), and today, she told me that the final invoice would be more because she’s “losing money” on this deal. She then turns around and tells me that they’ll be completed tomorrow. Am I getting jerked around? How is she losing money when they will be done 24 hours after the contract stipulates, and I told her I won’t even enforc

I am a commercial flooring subcontractor in Florida. I really want to diversify to make myself more valuable. I called the state to see what licenses I can get and there are literally zero. Does anyone have any advice? Any licenses I can earn they may not realize I'd be interested in/qualified for?

I have the education required but have never worked directly for a GC so I do not meet the prerequisite to earn a GC license. I do not see myself changing paths and growing into a foreman role for a GC so again, I do not meet the GC license requirements. I really want to learn as much as I can about construction but there does not appear to be any further education available in my field. They mentioned structural, electric, concrete, etc but those are completely foreign to me and are too specific to ever help me unless I change fields in the future. This is my company so I will be in this industry for the indefinite future. If I cannot earn a license, are there any courses I should look towards to at least expand my knowledge base? Flooring is pretty specific so I am not sure what I can specifically bring to the table to stand out from my competition. submitted by /u/amnowhere [link] [comments] from Construction http://ift.tt/2HUCrnE via Handy Rep Ai

Toro unveils ‘first of its kind’ Dingo TXL 2000, a stand-on loader with extendable arms

Telescoping arms with a wide reach and a doubled load capacity are key features of Toro’s new Dingo TXL 2000, which is in development. A new compact utility loader in development by Toro was the talk of the American Rental Association show in New Orleans, with passers-by eying the long reach of the vertical telescoping loader arms on the Dingo TXL 2000. The gleaming red prototype represented this model’s debut, and plenty of dealers and contractors got a peek of what’s to come with this machine, which is the first of its kind, according to Toro. “This machine won’t be out until the late part of 2018, and why we’re introducing it here is because it’s our 20-year anniversary of the Dingo product line,” Kevin Conry, senior marketing manager at Toro Siteworks in Bloomington, Minnesota, had explained during the show held February 19-21. VIDEO: The story of America’s first concrete street and the man who built it

Screenshot from Columbus Neighborhoods: The First Concrete Street in America. The Columbus Neighborhoods video below tells the story of the first concrete street in America, which was built in Bellefontaine, Ohio, by George Wells Bartholomew Jr. in 1891. Susan B. Manecke, Bartholomew’s great-granddaughter, says, “I think that he had a big vision in terms of commerce in the United States, in the whole country, and if he could make a road that would allow farmers and merchants to get their goods to market without having the wheels of their wagons and their horses hooves get stuck in the dirt and the crud and the mud, there could be some real progress in the United States.” According to Mark Pardi PE, Ohio Concrete, American Concrete Pavement Association, Ohio Chapter, Bartholomew bid the concrete pavement as an option to the brick pavers being used at the time, which were expensive and noisy. Bartholomew discovered someone in San Antonio who was German-trained in manufacturing cemen

Hawaii reduces weight limits on some bridges on 4 islands

Hanapepe River Bridge on Kaumualii Highway in Kauai. Photo: historicalhawaii.org . Hawaiian officials plan to change weight limit restrictions for bridges on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, and Kauai after reassessing how it calculates bridge weight restrictions due to the effect of heavy trucks, the Honolulu Star Advertiser reports. According to the news agency, Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) officials don’t expect the changes to affect passenger vehicles, but they may affect emergency vehicles, buses, and tractor trailers. Officials are coordinating with the public agencies on vehicle access to those areas, but commercial trucks should apply for an overload permit, lighten their loads, or take alternate routes. HDOT officials say the following bridges have new, lower weight limits, although some of the weight restrictions may be removed or reduced after additional testing, analysis, or bridge repair projects: Oahu Nuuanu Stream Bridge, westbound on Nimitz High

Contractors/Subs/Trades - What are the best CDs and Details you have ever seen?

I'm a young architect looking to improve, and I thought I'd begin with the folks who realize the designs. One of the primary contentions I've encountered in my career so far has been the criticism that contractor and builders levy on architects regarding their details and CDs. Most of these criticisms stem from things like lack of information, disorganization, lack of thoroughness, etc. I'm curious then if any of you have examples or thoughts you could share that could help me to become better at performing my end of the job, and that would help you perform your end of the job. As an aside, Thank you guys and girls for all the (often unappreciated by my field) work you do to create the built world. I feel too many of us pencil-pushers get stuck in a place where we forget that someone has to actually build the things we spit out of CAD. submitted by /u/StrangeVehicles [link] [comments] from Construction http://ift.tt/2Fd7z35 via Handy Rep Ai

Construction Education: getting my Masters

I have a BS in Construction Science and I want to get my masters in a subject that will complement my degree. Have any of you gone back to school or taken any useful continuing education courses? Considerations so far: MBA - practical and would look pretty on the wall BUT! Would it really give me a leg up and/or any truly useful knowledge for the construction industry? Is it worth the time and cost of more schooling? More Construction Science - the opportunity cost might not be advantageous if I were to take time off to go to school. Cost of school vs wages lost vs potential pay increase Something tech related - this one excites me the most. So many resources go into new construction processes not to mention software that makes the business side more stream lined. Any suggestions? TLDR: I have a BS in Construction, what should I do for my masters degree? submitted by /u/teamkarrett [link] [comments] from Construction http://ift.tt/2EUcy9o via Handy Rep Ai

HGTV makes customers delusional

I'm working on a project right now where a couple bought an old grain/feed depot and are trying to convert it into a wine bar. The place is probably 100+ years old and I swear the entire building is rotten and termite damaged to the core. It would be 1000000x easier and more cost-efficient to just demolish the building, and then build new construction on the property, while keeping the same floorplan and design. But, instead, they want to patchwork the building back together while keeping their "vision" for the "industrial chic farmhouse vibe" intact. The owner is literally "salvaging" old rusty nails so she can create a bar-top with the nails set in epoxy. Like, wtf. That shit gets under my skin (no pun intended) so quickly because of just how asinine it all is. Really, you're going to pull nails out of rotten floorboards because they have a "story" behind them? But, after all, they're signing the checks. So whatever, right? Aft

Sources of power of the grinder: ● Electricity ● Petrol ● Pneumatic or Compressed Air It is generally a good opportunity for metal fabrication shops, machine shops, and construction sites when there is angle grinder for sale as they use

Cat to close Waco Work Tools plant, cut 200 jobs

Sensors on the bucket, stick and boom can automate the digging process resulting in perfect slopes and trenches. With the better part of a year and a few consecutive positive earnings reports since the company had closed a facility or eliminated jobs, it seemed like Cat may be through with cuts associated with a massive cost reduction plan announced in 2015 . However, the company has decided that it will close its Work Tools manufacturing facility in Waco, Texas, eliminating 200 jobs. According to a report from the Waco Tribune-Herald , Cat spokesman Jamie Fox said the closing of the Work Tools plant will not affect the company’s distribution center in Waco. The Work Tools plant manufactures excavator buckets, couplers and hammers and these operations will be transferred to a Cat facility in Wamego, Kansas, Fox told the paper. Fox said the move was not dictated by waning demand for the attachments produced at the Waco facility. He added that “employees who lose their jobs will re
