Chevy lays claim to pickup bed crown as 2019 Silverado tops Ford, Ram in cargo space

Beyond the new body design, diesel option, and larger wheelbase, Chevy has added one more reason for you to buy the 2019 Silverado 1500 when it’s released this fall.

Chevy says its new “Durabed” design is its most functional yet, adding that it’s also the largest pickup bed available on a half-ton pickup.

If you’re thinking to yourself, “What the hell is a Durabed?” that’s because it’s the first time Chevy has actually branded the bed of one of its trucks with its own name.

Cat intros S2000/S3000 series mobile shears for faster demo, scrap work

Caterpillar has introduced new S2000/S3000 Series mobile shears for demolition and scrap work that the company says work faster than previous models.

The mobile shears are designed for Cat and other companies’ hydraulic excavators of 11 to more than 85 tons. Cat says the shears are “engineered for long, productive service,” thanks to increased yield and tensile strength properties and hardness ratings greater than T1-type steel.

By increasing force to weight ratios, which enables more cuts per hour, Cat has reduced cycle times on the new shears, making them faster than previous models. Their jaws are designed to allow material to fall away freely, and the speed valve increases cutting power and the jaws’ opening speed. Tapered space plates also speed cutting and reduce the amount of energy required from the shears.

Cat unveils the new D8T: “As easy as driving a pickup.” (A better blade, too)

Caterpillar announced a significant refresh of its D8T track type tractor on Thursday. The iconic heavy dozer now has an upgraded transmission, a new blade cutting edge design, new ripper technology, a more durable undercarriage.

The new engineering brings double digit performance and efficiency improvements in almost every category, including 18 percent more material moved per hour using the same amount of fuel. And if you’re an operator, the control system along with improved differential steering and dedicated steering pumps makes it “As easy as driving a pickup truck” according to the company’s YouTube demonstrator.

One of the key drivers to the D8Ts efficiency is an improved four-speed torque converter transmission with a lock up clutch and planetary gears. The torque converter relies on fluid coupling to push the driveline in most conditions but automatically locks the clutch mechanically when maximum power is needed. Cat added an intermediate gear between first and second for smooth shifting when you’re trying to bring a load up to speed.

Raleigh N.C. 540 outer loop faces environmental legal fight

The map above shows the 540 extension’s general location. Credit: NCDOT Environmental groups have filed a petition challenging the planned path of a future outer loop around Raleigh, North Carolina, due to concerns about the effect on nearby waterways that are home to endangered mussels. The $2.2 billion toll highway, an extension of N.C. 540, would complete the southern portion of an expressway outer loop. The construction contract for the first phase was awarded in December , and the N.C. Division of Water Quality recently issued an environmental permit for the project. The Southern Environmental Law Center , along with other environmental groups, is petitioning for an administrative hearing to challenge the environmental permit. The SELC says the proposed highway would “tear through 57,000 linear feet of streams and 70 acres of wetlands.” The groups are also concerned about increased stormwater runoff from the additional pavement from the highway, as well as more greenhouse em...
