My dad and a friend of mine have background in home improvement. They are helping me replace an interior load bearing wall in the center of my home. Our plan is to build the temporary wall next to the load bearing wall, then we have the option to put together a beam with structural beam made of laminate beams, OR, I have a friend that has 8x8 barnwood beams that would span the gap. We ran the beam calculator, so I think either way we go will be viable. The barn wood looks to be much heavier to put into place than the structural laminate beam.
My concern is that when you beam the wall, you are going to have a lot of weight under the ends of the span. A friend recommended 24''x24'' flat concrete slabs under those spots, then some jacks to bolster the support of the floor.
Any things I am missing in the process here? Things to consider?
