Could there be a gas leak inside?

Where I'm staying, there is a small GE window air conditioner unit. The LL was owner was concerned about water from the unit leaking into the wall so he drilled a hole but it somehow caused the ac to make a pfftt air coming out sound. He then told me he thinks there may be a gas leak but that it wont affect me inside the place because the gas will leak outside (the back of the unit is outside through the wall). Is this true? I've turned off the ac unit and opened up two windows. Is there a chance the gas could leak inside? What should I do?
