Price of Steel is Going to Go Up

Just read a thread in /r/news about the tariffs that are about to be imposed on steel from Canada, Mexico, & Europe. Looks like the price is going to go up for all steel, whether it's structural columns/beams or framing. Keep that in mind if you're doing a design build and also keep the increased lead time in mind. Strap in, it's gonna get bumpy. submitted by /u/SwoopnBuffalo [link] [comments] from Construction https://ift.tt/2J8ed9H via Handy Rep Ai

$11B Ill. road, bridge plan has new ‘asset management’ focus

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner A six-year plan announced by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner would infuse $11.05 billion in roads and bridges and spend more on smaller repairs for long-term savings. The focus of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Multi-Year Proposed Highway Improvement Program would be creating jobs, improving the state’s economy, as well as improving safety, Rauner says. “Investing in transportation creates jobs and economic opportunity, improves safety and makes Illinois a better place to raise a family,” Rauner said. “This plan will make Illinois more competitive while protecting the interests of the taxpayers.” The Illinois DOT says the plan is a departure from the state’s previous transportation plans because it incorporates smaller repairs to save money over the long run rather than focusing on a “worst-first” philosophy. This “asset management” approach uses data to reduce the rate of road and bridge deterioration to prevent the need for costlier rehabs

WisDOT awards I-94 reconstruction project to Michels Corp.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation awarded Michels Corp. a reconstruction project for the south segment of Interstate 94 between Racine and Kenosha County around Foxconn Technology Group’s LCD manufacturing plant in Mount Pleasant, the Milwaukee Business Journal  reports. Michels bid of $168 million was the lowest bid submitted for the project, which consists of nine separate projects on the 8.1-mile section of the interstate. The project calls for expanding the freeway to eight lanes between highways 142 and 20 and rebuilding the intersections at County Road E, County Road KR, and Wisconsin State Highway 11. Work is expected to be completed in November 2019. A second project, the 4.5-mile reconstruction of I-94 in Racine County from Highway 20 to County Road G, has yet to be awarded, but Michels’s $80 million bid was the lowest of five bids for that project as well. The work consists of four projects, including expanding a portion of the freeway to eight lanes and rebuildi

Back deck construction

So I'm wondering if the construction on this back deck was done correctly? The outside board appears to be screwed into the wall, but with only a 4" tapcon, it's not even going into the brick. It's going into the white trim board that's screwed into the brick. Is that white board secure enough to hold this deck in place? Deere intros Grade Guidance for 210G LC, updates to 190G W wheeled excavator and 11 others

At a recent media event held jointly with Hitachi , John Deere took its first step into automated digging and announced updates to its 190G wheeled excavator alongside a series of upgrades to 11 other excavator models. Deere has introduced what it calls “grade guidance” technology on the 210G LC. Grade guidance is Deere’s term for what others call the “indicate” mode. The guidance system shows the operator the buckets location on a monitor with respect to a 2D or 3D design surface and enables them to achieve final grade using only the display in the operator’s station. The system was developed with Topcon and is factory integrated and ready to use on delivery. It will be available on the 350G LC and 470G LC excavators next year as will Deere’s first fully automated excavator control.   New 190G W Deere also announced updates to its 190G wheeled excavator. Featuring a number of “customer inspired” updates, the revamped John Deere 190G W wheeled excavator has a Tier 4 Final, 173

Texas shop’s 48-hour, half-cost truck remanufacturing leads to a DOT grant program

Jim Camp says he can sleep better at night knowing that he’s saving tax payers tens of thousands of dollars through Vehicle Reman. Camp, who’s the director of transportation at the East Texas Council of Governments, opted to have two paratransit busses rebuilt through Vehicle Reman instead of scrapping them and buying brand new replacements. The math’s pretty simple: a new bus built on a Ford E-350 chassis costs around $73,000, Camp explained. But for roughly half that cost, he can get a refurbished bus through Vehicle Reman with a three-year, 75,000-mile powertrain warranty. No stranger to fleet acquisitions, Camp took a close look at Vehicle Reman and liked what he saw. Company founder and managing director Greig Latham and sales director Steve Belden have plenty of auto industry experience, including refurbishing vehicles for the U.S. military. They gave Camp a tour of their facility in Tyler, Texas and carefully explained their assembly line approach to rebuilding fleet vehicl

Cracks in Miami bridge were documented 19 days before deadly collapse

Well before a deadly bridge collapse on March 15, a series of cracks had begun emerging on both the south and north ends of the new pedestrian bridge at Florida International University in Miami, the National Transit Safety Board says in a new preliminary report. It says that cracks on the bridge’s north end were documented with photos a full 19 days before t he failure that killed six people . The significance of the cracking remains unclear. The investigation into the cause of the collapse of the 950-ton bridge could continue into 2019. The cracking has been a concern from the start, though the preliminary report shows the cracks had actually been noticed much earlier than had first been made public. Two days before the bridge fell, the lead engineer on the project had left a voicemail with state officials saying cracking had been seen on the north end of the span that had been earlier moved into place during accelerated construction. The engineer, W. Denney Pate with FIGG Bri

Genie’s new Lift Guard prevents potential hazards for slab scissors, mast lifts

When the “whiskers” on the guardrails touch an object, Genie’s Lift Guard sets off an alarm and lights and automatically stops the slab scissor lift or vertical mast lift. Genie has developed a new safety system designed to automatically prevent a slab scissor lift or vertical mast lift platform from hitting an object. The company is showcasing a prototype of its Genie Lift Guard Contact Alarm through May 11 at the OSHA National Safety Stand-Down  event to prevent construction falls. The system is similar to those on the company’s boom lifts , but tailored to the needs of slab scissor lifts and vertical mast lifts. The alarm system includes activation “whiskers” mounted to the front and back guardrails of the platform. When the whiskers touch an object, an alarm is sounded and beacons flash to alert occupants and ground personnel. The machine automatically stops moving and won’t continue operations until the operator acknowledges the alarm. After acknowledgement, the operator can

Career advise

I've worked for a family construction company based out of SLC UT for the past 6 years. We've gone from doing small remods to million+ custom homes in that time. (For info visit wasatchbuilders.net) I've gone from broom pusher/go for guy to experienced craftsman in multiple trades/PM (kinda. My role in the company is a complicated one, but I do it well) the pay isnt great but it's not bad. I'm firmly part of the dwindling middle class. I'm 1099 so I get to write off stuff. Career path here would be to grow to a super, and ultimately partner. BUT... I just got offered a super intendant job at a brand new commercial/residential company for significantly more money. I'd be their first employee. But I'd be W-2 so no more tax write offs. I'd have a significant training period until I was thrown into the full responsibility entailed by being a super. I'm leaning towards taking the new job, but I'm reaching out to all resources for advise. What d

Residential Academic Journals and/or case studies

Hello! I'm a carpenter starting my own business and I'm trying to find some solid numbers and research on maintenance and emergency maintenance costs for a presentation. I know the price of things only vaguely from a first hand basis. I've worked almost entirely cost plus and I've never really had to bid for anything, and haven't needed to research. I know things like "It'll cost about X." Which doesn't help when I'm trying to present empirical data even though what I say may be true. Where can I find studies that go into detail about water heater life length? Or the effects of partial suction line blockage on the life of an AC compressor? Or how much extra wear a furnace has when it is short-firing? Or studies on dew point control using vapor barriers? I know these studies exist, or Tyvek wouldn't. All the academic journals I've found so far have focused pretty much on structural engineering, "green" composite material lon
