I'm working on a project right now where a couple bought an old grain/feed depot and are trying to convert it into a wine bar. The place is probably 100+ years old and I swear the entire building is rotten and termite damaged to the core.
It would be 1000000x easier and more cost-efficient to just demolish the building, and then build new construction on the property, while keeping the same floorplan and design. But, instead, they want to patchwork the building back together while keeping their "vision" for the "industrial chic farmhouse vibe" intact.
The owner is literally "salvaging" old rusty nails so she can create a bar-top with the nails set in epoxy. Like, wtf. That shit gets under my skin (no pun intended) so quickly because of just how asinine it all is. Really, you're going to pull nails out of rotten floorboards because they have a "story" behind them?
But, after all, they're signing the checks. So whatever, right?
After spending time with my girlfriend watching some of the "Fixer Upper" shows on HGTV, I'm entirely convinced that HGTV is the source of all this nonsensical behavior.
If I hear the words country charm, rustic, industrial, character etc. again, I'm going to have someone drop a bucket of hammers on my head just so I can go home with less of a headache.
