Trimble launches AI-powered load scale on Hitachi wheel loaders

Hitachi Wheel Loader

Hitachi’s ZW250-6 is among the company’s wheel loaders for which Trimble’s L3180 SmartScale is an option.

Trimble says the Loadrite L3180 SmartScale system uses artificial intelligence for faster, more precise loading. And the company has joined with Hitachi Machinery Loaders America to bring its newest onboard weighing system to Hitachi’s wheel loaders.

Trimble's LoadRite Loading DeviceThe L3180 achieves weighing accuracy on all types of terrain and for operators of various skill levels, Trimble says. The system tracks the loader to monitor performance and can be used to help meet daily loading targets. It also prevents overloading, the company says.

It is available at Hitachi dealers as an option on wheel loaders, from the ZW220-6 with a bucket capacity of 2 cubic yards to the ZW550-6 with 8.3 cubic yards of bucket capacity.

Trimble says the L3180 is a complete revamp of its loader scale system and includes weighing intelligence and solid-state sensors for monitoring loading. The system syncs data through built-in WiFi with its InsightHQ reporting portal. This allows for real-time productivity and performance reports and for consolidating information from all equipment on the jobsite using Loadrite devices, Trimble says.

The company also doubled the size of the touchscreen display to 5.7 inches from previous systems, boosted text size and added colorful graphics, a cleaner interface and faster menu navigation.

The operator can monitor performance from the cab, receiving such information as tons per hour, tons, and truck count. Other personnel can also receive the same information on desktop or mobile devices. A built-in GPS creates a loadout performance heatmap of the data to monitor incorrect stockpile or truck loading. The data can be presented in graphical and dashboard formats, as well.

The L3180 also delivers eTickets via email, with load delivery information from truck drivers to the site foreman or any other designated personnel. The eTickets allow drivers to get on the road quicker by electronically sending updates of materials deliveries, and they reduce paperwork, Trimble says.

The system will be demonstrated at the Trimble Dimensions International User Conference from November 5 to 7 in Las Vegas.

The $2.2 billion toll highway, an extension of N.C. 540, would complete the southern portion of an expressway outer loop. The construction contract for the first phase was awarded in December , and the N.C. Division of Water Quality recently issued an environmental permit for the project. The Southern Environmental Law Center , along with other environmental groups, is petitioning for an administrative hearing to challenge the environmental permit. The SELC says the proposed highway would “tear through 57,000 linear feet of streams and 70 acres of wetlands.” The groups are also concerned about increased stormwater runoff from the additional pavement from the highway, as well as more greenhouse em...
